Black Friday got its name for because the weekend after Thanksgiving has traditionally been the weekend that retailers finally moved from the red into the black. What does that even mean? It means that the business books were finally in the positive for the first time during the year.

What we now know as Black Friday first started in the 1950’s as patrons flocked to locals malls and shopping areas to pick up bargain deals as the kickoff to the Christmas season. The evolution of online shopping have taken the idea of Black Friday and expanded it to the full weekend of Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. In recent years, especially in light of the Coronavirus, the significance of Black Friday has diminished greatly.
